This project was designed to get information out to Ames residents in an easy to consume format.
During the flooding, the City of Ames experienced a water main break, forcing citizens to rely on bottled water. The map was continuously updated with locations that were crowd sourced from social media sites. The locations of KCCI SchoolNet weather sites and USGS river gauges were included with their pop-ups containing dynamic images of the weather and river forecasts. Media such as live web cameras, aerial photos from news sources, along with photos on the ground from social media were also added in the aftermath.
This map received over 3,000 views during the flooding. This project also received the American Red Cross Heroes of the Heartland award.
